Our Story

Fort Wayne West Coast Swing was created out of love for West Coast Swing and a longing to have a core community of Westies in Fort Wayne and the northern Indiana area.

After experiencing a weekend workshop at Indy Dance X for West Coast Swing, Austin had a “what if” moment that spurred on a chain of thoughts, ideas, and outreach efforts that would eventually spur on the creation of Fort Wayne West Coast Swing.

We began by asking around to see what kind of interest there was in a Fort Wayne West Coast Swing club, and the overall interest was extremely positive.

We then started talking with studios, professional instructors, studios and other successful WCS clubs to answer the question: what does it take to create a West Coast Swing club?

It’s no easy venture, but I feel strongly for what this community can become. We are blessed to be able to start on strong footing with professional instructors and stunning ballrooms within our reach. This project could not begin, nor sustain itself without our supporters, and these supporters include you: our dancers and patrons.

Since the club’s earliest days, she has been supportive, providing knowledge about West Coast Swing, advice about club development, and countless resources (like the Anchor Room) towards the success of our community.

She has been teaching West Coast Swing for over x years, and runs an annual, premiere dance event in Indianapolis called Indy Dance X. This event features WCS, Country, Line Dance, Ballroom, and Salsa workshops, various competitions, and hours-upon-hours of late night dancing.

Christopher Spalding

Club Advisor & Instructor

Christopher Spalding is a part of the earliest adopters of the West Coast Swing club in Fort Wayne. Chris has always been a supporter of a Fort Wayne WCS club, has provided countless club and business advice towards the creation and success of the club, in addition to putting forward resources towards the club’s events, like the FWBC’s studio, instruction, and more.

Chris and his studio enables the Fort Wayne West Coast Swing club to be a multi-venue club, giving our community much greater flexibility in our events and activities.

The Anchor Room is a studio ballroom in Ossian, IN, about 20 minutes south of Fort Wayne. This venue has a large dance floor, plenty of seating and tables to socialize (or dine) at. The Anchor Room is utilized by many dance clubs, making it a hotspot for many different dances throughout the year and each month.

The Fort Wayne Ballroom Company is another venue that the FWWCS utilizes on a regular basis. Now with two ballrooms, FWBC hosts regular weekly events, which usually includes WCS & country music in the second ballroom. FWBC is staffed by a friendly team, headed by Christopher Spalding and Kelly Bartlett.

West Coast Swing is a style of swing partner dancing that is danced to a wide variety of musical styles. From modern/contemporary music (on the radio and in clubs) to blues to R&B, and more, West Coast Swing focuses on musicality and interpreting the music (known as improvisation or “playing”) within the dance. West Coast Swing consists of primarily 6 and 8 count patterns, where nearly every pattern can be creatively modified on the fly by +/- 2 beats. Many West Coast Swing dancers (Westies) love this type of swing dance because of its musicality and the opportunity for both the leader and the follower to interpret the music and “play” within the music. If you like the idea of an interactive and engaging dance that allows you and your partner to express yourself musically, you’ll love West Coast Swing!
