Playing and improvisation through West Coast Swing is a large part of the reason the dance is so popular across the world. Through play and improv, both leaders and followers get a chance to express themselves musically and act-react off of (and with) their dance partner.
When “play” comes up in West Coast Swing, it’s usually referring to the follower of the dance, although both the leader and the follower can “play.” Playing is a term expressed within West Coast Swing when one partner decides to break out of patterns and express his or herself musically based on what’s being heard.
